Here are some Tom Kelley quotes to kick things off. “Hurdlers do more with less. They get a charge out of trying to do something that’s never been done before.” “Hurdlers know that you don’t always have to tackle a challenge head-on if you can find a way to sidestep it.” It’s easy to become locked into a particular idea or method of solving a problem, especially when it originated with us. Whenever we meet an obstacle that’s to big for our method of problem solving, we can give up and write problem off as being impossible to solve. An example would be canceling a church service because you can’t find someone to preach. We assume if there’s no one available to teach then you can’t have a Sunday service. The Hurdler finds a way to leap over the barrier. They are determined. They take risks and refuse to be bound to structure. They know how to work around the system to achieve their goals. Another example of this would be the person that says that they can’t go on a vacation because they can’t afford to fly. What about driving? As a matter of fact, this happened to me! A few years ago, I couldn’t afford to go on vacation. I was in serious debt. I discovered that resorts would allow me to stay on their facilities for a few days free of charge if I only attended a 90 minute presentation. I then embarked on my first “free” vacation ever. The presentation was pretty frustrating, but I had a great time. Sometimes the lack of resources forces us to be more creative.
