I spent some time this morning getting caught up on The Bridge Podcast. I posted two new episodes this morning: Missional Impact and True Diversity. Click here or check out the link in the right-handed column.

Last night, I had the opportunity to hear Noel Jones speak at the 10th Spirituality and Medicine Banquet sponsored by Howard University. Noel Jones is one of my favorite speakers. He said that you discover your purpose when your gift meets a need. The time will arise when your God-given gifts match an existing need. Yet, we are required to maintain our character in the process. Dafnette and I had some members of our launch team over to our place for a potluck fellowship today. We had a great time socializing and having some amazing fun. Things started to get a little heated while we were playing a game. No, I wasn’t the one that sparked the fire…this time around 🙂 I love Christians! They’re so competitive!
I’m truly excited about our Expression event coming up on Friday, May 5th. I’m learning more and more about the rewards of engaging culture. It’s not always easy. As a pastor, it can be easier to engage other believers. You spend so much time with them. You already know their needs and tastes, especially if you teach on a regular basis. Meeting the community on their turf is a whole different ball game and requires a different mindset. I feel as if I am launching out into the deep. Will it work? Will it really connect? Will they enjoy it enough to return? Only God knows those answers. I believe it is worth the risk, even if we reach one person. The picture on the left is a display sign that I designed for the event. The sign was all ready to go until I got the proof from the printing company showing that it was too pixelated. I had to redesign the whole thing. I was quite frustrated, but I think it was worth it. The new design is a better fit for the personality and feel of Expression. I also created a promo video. Check it out below. As you can see, I’ve been quite a busy bee.
We had our first InsideOut outreach event for The Bridge this past Saturday. The team passed out hundreds of promo cards (just a little under a thousand) for Expression, our poetry, art, and music event on May 5th. Check out our MySpace page for more info. We were encouraged by the response of the people. Not everyone accepted the card, of course. Yet, we didn’t find any of cards in the trash or on the ground! God even allowed us to meet and connect with poets and artists. One young lady walked up to us and started reading poetry! Can you believe that? She even inquired about the church. Pray that God would use Expression as a vehicle to lead people to Him.
As I sit here and reflect on Ephesians 1-2 this morning, I’m reminded of the hope I have in Christ Jesus. God’s salvation is bestowed on His people simply because of His grace and mercy. We dear not say it’s due to our works and merit. It was this generous act of God that drove paul to give thanks and pray for the church. Salvation should move us to be more other-centered. Our reflection on God’s goodness should drive us to be people of prayer; giving thanks for others and praying that God would do amazing things in their lives. I listened to this song a few minutes ago during my time with God. It paints such an awsome picture of the greatness of God.
If you’re like me, you’ve witnessed constant media coverage of the Virginia Tech University shooting. Some students have decided to go back home and take a much needed break. I don’t know any Virginia Tech students personally. If you do or know of any Virginia Tech students in your congregation, extend a hand of love and encouragement towards them. My heart and prayers go out to all the families that have lost loved ones in the shooting. Only God knows why this tragedy takes place. Sometimes we spend too much time trying to figure out why God allow such events. Some go as far as to give their “God-given” reasons for such tragedies. I’ve found we are most valuable when we show the love of Christ, even without knowing all the answers.
